A Safe and Healthy Home

Happy New Year

A new year is a new beginning and you get to choose how you use your time and fill your days. It is always nice to begin with new ideas and insights that uplift and inspire. This excerpt from Revolutionize Your Health: How to Take Back Your Body’s Power to Heal is meant to stimulate your thoughts and provide a few ideas to help you live with a greater sense of well-being! The information selected is universal and is helpful to almost everyone. No matter where you live – whether home is a one-room apartment or a luxurious villa – you want to feel safe and comfortable. If you have children, safety is a major concern.

Creating a Safe and Healthy Home

Besides eliminating all the toxins, and hazardous interferences from your home, we also want to emphasize the importance of being highly selective in whom and what you allow into your home in order to create and maintain an emotionally supportive environment. Everything you bring into your home either increases the energy or depletes it. The colors you choose to paint your walls, the furniture you buy, the carpets, lighting features, the linen and fabrics you use – they all influence you and your energy, and thus your health.

It is important to carefully select what you allow into your personal space, including the news you listen to (which is normally bad news), the films you watch (comedy or a violent movie), and especially the people around you (do they uplift you and make you smile, or do they depress you?). Everything impacts your energy field much more than you probably realize. We will talk more about that in Chapter 14, Energetic Awareness.

The city or town you live in, the available housing, the architecture of various buildings, the highway system surrounding you, and the terrain of your geographic region all affect your mental, emotional, and physical health. For example, if you grew up in a large city with a smorgasbord of culinary, cultural, and entertainment options, variety became a way of life. If you lived in this environment until you graduated from high school or college, you are probably always going to feel emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually comfortable living in or near a metropolitan area as you are accustomed to the energy and pace of city life. If you grew up in a rural area with lots of trees, streams, and cornfields, the fast pace, energy, and sights and sounds of the city may create overwhelm and stress. As a city dweller with a rural upbringing, you may find yourself looking for ways to dodge work in search of a quiet sanctuary, where you can sit beside a flowing stream, dangle your feet in the water, and listen to the birds sing. The sounds, sights, and smells of the natural world of your rural upbringing remain part of what you need to feel at home.

The word home means different things to different people, but for the vast majority of us, it is the place we return to every day to recharge. It is where we eat, sleep, and raise our families. Home is not just a location; it is the place we have filled with special collections of important personal treasures such as family photos, holiday decorations, vacation memorabilia, and the artwork of our children and grandchildren. It is the place where many of us celebrate and experience the most memorable events in our lives. And it is often the place where we spend most of the time when we are sick. We want to be certain that our environment allows us to rest, rejuvenate, recover, and heal.

Your Personal Healing Space

Healing always takes place in the silence when the mind, body, emotions, and spirit are in harmony. Oddly enough, this can happen anywhere and sometimes in amazing and surprising ways and places – on a horseback riding trail, on your office couch, in your bed, on a bench in the park, on a dock, during a dance class, sitting under a tree, relaxing on a massage table or waiting on the operating table for surgery to begin.

While healing can happen anywhere, the primary place to consider is your living environment. Your personal healing space should be a place where your body, mind, emotions, and spirit can relax and be in harmony. Such a healing space is especially helpful when you are suffering from a chronic disease, chronic pain, or are bedridden.

Your healing space doesn’t have to be extravagant, but you do want it to feel as welcoming, comfortable, and cozy as possible. You want it to be clean, tidy, and clutter-free to avoid stress. Surround yourself with special items that raise your energy and lighten your mood: photos, music, artwork, your favorite colors, your most comfortable clothing, collections of special items, reading or listening material, comfortable pillows, and appropriate bed clothing. Lighting is important, as is fresh air. If you use air conditioning, make sure the filters are cleaned regularly. If you are mobile, you want to be able to move around freely with easy access to the out-of-doors for fresh air and appropriate exercise.

The healing environment mentally, emotionally, and spiritually sets the stage for the healing to occur. You or a relative or friend for whom you are caring, need quiet, uninterrupted time every day for meditative silence, which might be meaningful guided meditation, resting, sitting, walking, or breathing meditation. It might be sitting on the ground overlooking a lake, sitting under a tree in the middle of a forest, or sitting on a bench in Central Park. The silent space that is created is the mental space where you can develop the belief in your body’s healing capacity and a positive attitude.

We recommend that you have a meditative area inside your home. According to the Feng Shui bagua map – one of the main tools used in Feng Shui to analyze the energy of any given space, be it a home, office, or garden – the best place for a spiritual center is within the Earth element in the center of your home. If you can, create a small altar where you put items that carry special meaning for you – for example, a crystl-like rose quartz or amethyst, candles, and/or meaningful personal items, perhaps a water fountain to help you relax and focus. Try to bring the colors of nature into the space. In this special space, you can process your situation, gain intuitive information about your condition, become aware of changes you need to make, and gain the wisdom to awaken and stimulate your body’s healing power.

We suggest you create your healing environment right now, regardless of the quality of your health. Remember, our bodies heal themselves all the time, and this daily healing is best supported by a comfortable, harmonious inner and outer environment. Research has confirmed many times over that a mindful, balanced lifestyle is the best support you will ever have for the development of positive health. Quiet time and a meditative practice build your immune system and support health and well-being.
